Back to Phnom Penh * Bogus, baby, bogus!

Hi-- Got back to Cambodia from the US earlier this month, and now we're starting to hit our stride with a new fundraising effort, coming on the heels of receiving 501 (c) (3) fiscal sponsorship from the Media Alliance in Oakland, CA...not that the fundraising environment is that good these days ;) Anyway, it was refreshing to be back in the US, actually, with a decent level of optimism due to the new Obama administration; was also nice to attend an participate in a world class, "A" level fest, the Florida Film Fest with our movie, " Vuth Learns to Rock ", featuring Jun from Zeppelin Rock Cafe . If you haven’t seen it yet, go see Jun over at Zep café , we’re selling compilation discs for $4 a pop…the split is as follows: Jun $1, Me $1, Vuth $1, Studio ( Camerado ) $1. Anyway, being in a pro exhibition environment for a while makes it all the more evident how problematic some outfits here in Cambodia are when it comes to screening movies without the c...

Please send a contribution to help us maintain festival operations - Even $10 helps and goes a long way out here in Cambodia** All supporters will be listed on the CAMBOFEST website's sponsor page at www.cambofest.com ; contributors sending $50 or more will receive a special “Best of CAMBOFEST 2008” DVD as our way of saying thanks. 1) PREFERRED M...

CAMERADO now 501 (c) 3 tax deductible--support our important social issue media projects

:: Hello from Camerado :: We are happy to announce that Media Alliance of San Francisco, CA is now a fiscal sponsor for several of our ongoing, innovative media projects in SE Asia. Media Alliance had been a sponsor for Camerado’s first award winning social issue documentary feature, BookWars, and we’re excited to have their vote of confidence once again as a fiscal sponsor for our activities. Fiscal sponsorship means that any support for Camerado is now 501 (c) 3 tax deductible for all US based individual and foundation contributors. Our 501 (c) 3 ability also means we’re now eligible for many grants and foundational support which we weren’t able to access previously…so, even if you can’t offer a direct contribution, any referrals to grants or foundational support is appreciated! For our friends around the world who aren’t covered by the US tax code--we still welcome any financial or in-kind contributions you can offer: we’d be happy to offer you a visible credit for an...

Nina says the content is FREE / Hey, yo, I disagree...

Here's a blog by animator Nina Paley, who asserts that media content is FREE: http://blog.ninapaley.com/2009/04/06/understanding-free-content/ Her recent animated feature, "Sita Sings the Blues" is beautiful by the way, though largely suported by donors, which may explain her position. My own sense is, after witnessing the destruction of the movie industry in Cambodia due to piracy of content, is that positions regarding media content being "free" don't hold water in normal commercial environments. The content may seem to be free when donors are paying for it*, but in commercial, private sector operations (basically, the backbone of a healthy and normal civil society) this position isn't sustainable for the media sector. The decline of the movie industry in Cambodia is in my view case in point. The idea of "free" content may be prevalent, I suppose, when there's a high density of donor-sponsored media content to sustain the notion; but I wo...

My letter to the NY Times travel editor--

Sadly unpublished! So here it is below, instead: ==========================>>> I would like to commend the NY Times on its coverage of the Southern Coast of Cambodia in its travel and leisure section article, “Banishing the Ghosts of Cambodia”. I’m a media maker and student in the Master’s of Development Studies program at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, and I have lived in Cambodia for the past 4+ years. In my view, any stories that celebrate the new and more progressive sides of Cambodia should be applauded. However, I’d also like to point out some shortcomings in the article that may bear relevance for future articles, and I hope the Times will consider implementing any suggestions that follow. While Cambodia is an attractive and exciting tourist destination, with dimensions far exceeding Angkor Wat and the Killing Fields, it is also still a Lesser Developed Country (LDC). Tourism is a welcome and viable potential means for any LDC to increase its revenue base. However,...

Me, Mom...and John Voight

Image
On the final day of the 2009 Florida Film Fest: We'd just wrapped the Q&A after the second screening of my Cambodian short doc, "Vuth Learns to Rock" when we happened upon legendary actor, John Voight. My Ma' (who happens to live in Orlando, where the fest takes place each year) had just explained to Mr. Voight that "Midnight Cowboy" was the first movie she'd seen after arriving in the US...he said he was really happy to hear that, so we took this photo. All in all, he was a gracious and very cool guy.
