Nina says the content is FREE / Hey, yo, I disagree...

Here's a blog by animator Nina Paley, who asserts that media content is FREE: http://blog.ninapaley.com/2009/04/06/understanding-free-content/ Her recent animated feature, "Sita Sings the Blues" is beautiful by the way, though largely suported by donors, which may explain her position. My own sense is, after witnessing the destruction of the movie industry in Cambodia due to piracy of content, is that positions regarding media content being "free" don't hold water in normal commercial environments. The content may seem to be free when donors are paying for it*, but in commercial, private sector operations (basically, the backbone of a healthy and normal civil society) this position isn't sustainable for the media sector. The decline of the movie industry in Cambodia is in my view case in point. The idea of "free" content may be prevalent, I suppose, when there's a high density of donor-sponsored media content to sustain the notion; but I wo...

My letter to the NY Times travel editor--

Sadly unpublished! So here it is below, instead: ==========================>>> I would like to commend the NY Times on its coverage of the Southern Coast of Cambodia in its travel and leisure section article, “Banishing the Ghosts of Cambodia”. I’m a media maker and student in the Master’s of Development Studies program at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, and I have lived in Cambodia for the past 4+ years. In my view, any stories that celebrate the new and more progressive sides of Cambodia should be applauded. However, I’d also like to point out some shortcomings in the article that may bear relevance for future articles, and I hope the Times will consider implementing any suggestions that follow. While Cambodia is an attractive and exciting tourist destination, with dimensions far exceeding Angkor Wat and the Killing Fields, it is also still a Lesser Developed Country (LDC). Tourism is a welcome and viable potential means for any LDC to increase its revenue base. However,...

Me, Mom...and John Voight

Image
On the final day of the 2009 Florida Film Fest: We'd just wrapped the Q&A after the second screening of my Cambodian short doc, "Vuth Learns to Rock" when we happened upon legendary actor, John Voight. My Ma' (who happens to live in Orlando, where the fest takes place each year) had just explained to Mr. Voight that "Midnight Cowboy" was the first movie she'd seen after arriving in the US...he said he was really happy to hear that, so we took this photo. All in all, he was a gracious and very cool guy.

A few friendly pix from the Stardust Lounge party at the 2009 FFF: ...Camerado filmmaker J Rosette with filmmaker Marc Havener ["And What Remains"] ...and a great fan of the FFF, Marie, who promised to see all our movies. ...with director Jack Truman ["60 Year old Stripper"] and the subject of his next doc: Mom! ...and a few large hailstone that pelted us the day before yesterday; kept them in the freezer to use for special mixed drinks later that day.

** New PR in Florida re: "Vuth" **

[By Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel Mar 28, 2009 ] Camerado producer director Jason Rosette brought his charming English mum (who lives in Orlando) and talked up his Cambodian documentary, Vuth Learns to Rock , which is in the International shorts program of the festival. He's making plans to document the efforts of Cambodian translators/publishers to grapple with the Jack Kerouac classic, On the Road. How will his mad "bop" ramble translate? The local Jack Kerouac House project should hook up with him. That sounds like a funny film, even if you have to read subtitles to know how much trouble the translators have. New Review for LOST IN NEW MEXICO

the latest review of Camerado's new second (dramatic) feature "LOST IN NEW MEXICO: the strange tale of Susan Hero"... =====================>>> Lost in New Mexico: The Strange Tale of Susan Hero . color. 85 min. Jason Rosette , Camerado , www.createspace.com/234901 . 2008. DVD UPC 8-83629-27962-6. $49.95. Public performance. This atmospheric and moody no-budget feature shot around the city of Albuquerque is aptly marketed by its resourceful director as "a sci-fi cloning road movie for the 21st century." Rosette's timely fusing of diverse genre elements involves no less diverse a cast of characters: Susan, a grieving young woman who robs the movie theater at which she's employed so she can pay for the cloning of her recently deceased daughter; Dr. Morell, a maverick geneticist bent on extending the reach of his illegal cloning services; Javier, an illegal Mexican immigrant accompanying Susan; Carl (played by Rosette), a self-doubting FDA...
